Save the Dates for October DVAM activities!


October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM)

Did you know? There is a 20-30% lifetime risk for a woman to be battered. One out of five (21% percent) of
Michigan women with current partners reported sustaining some type of violence in that relationship. Forty
percent of 14-17 year olds reported knowing someone their age who has been hit by a dating partner.

Please join us for one or more of the following DVAM events:

October 1 -31
Purple Ribbons – wear a purple ribbon to promote Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Ribbons will be
distributed throughout October. Stop by Shelterhouse to get your purple lapel ribbon today.

Sunday, October 2
100 Men Campaign – Watch for our special full-page announcement in the Midland Daily News
on Sunday, October 2, featuring 100+ local men publically taking a stand against violence in our
community.

October 2 - 31
“Traveling Pants” Display – Blue jeans decorated by area students and adults will be
displayed on the mezzanine level of the library, October 2-31. These jeans were created in
connection with Denim Day to recognize the importance of healthy relationships and the
need to end sexual violence.

Monday, October 3
Courage, Strength, Hope Opening Reception – Featuring photographs of survivors taken by Cathy Budd
and pieces from artists throughout the community. The exhibit runs from October 3 through
October 30 at Creative 360 (1517 Bayliss). An opening night reception with refreshments is
scheduled for Monday, October 3 from 6-7:30 p.m.

Monday, October 3 -30
Courage, Strength, Hope Art Exhibit – Featuring photographs of survivors taken by Cathy Budd

October 30 at Creative 360 (1517 Bayliss).

Friday, October 14
Lunafest Film Festival (Gladwin) – A national, traveling film festival with award-winning
short films “by, for and about women” on Friday, October 14 at 7 p.m. at First United
Methodist Church in Gladwin. Refreshments will be provided.

Saturday, October 22
Lunafest Film Festival (Midland) – Matrix Cinema will present Lunafest at the Midland
Center for the Arts Little Theater on Saturday, October 22 at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be
provided.

Tuesday, October 18
Celebrating Families Story Time at the Library – For children ages 2-8 and their parents.
Tuesday, October 18 at 7 p.m. and Wednesday, October 19 at 10 a.m. at the Grace A. Dow
Library.

Celebrating Families Story Time at the Library – For children ages 2-8 and their parents.
Tuesday, October 18 at 7 p.m. and Wednesday, October 19 at 10 a.m. at the Grace A. Dow
Library.

Tuesday, October 25
Survivors Speak and Shelterhouse Annual Meeting – This event will feature several
survivors telling their stories of overcoming violence in their intimate relationships. Tuesday,
October 25 at Creative 360. The Annual Meeting will begin at 5:15 p.m. and the Survivors Speak
will begin at 6:00 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.
